Dear Madam, dear Sir,

It is our pleasure and privilege to invite you to Amsterdam, the capital of The Netherlands, for the 53rd ESPN Annual Meeting in September 2021.

The scientific committee of the ESPN  2021 is proud to prepare a programme of outstanding scientific quality in collaboration with several international societies to stimulate cross-talk between different specialties involved in the treatment of children with kidney and bladder disorders. Experts from our society as well as international speakers will join forces to deliver state-of-the-art lectures, generate debate and identify questions for future research. The programme includes a full spectrum of presentations from keynote lectures, basic research and tertiary care nephrology to nephrology issues in a more general paediatrics setting. Our programme is designed with young nephrology fellows in mind, the future of our society.

The meeting will be held in the RAI congress and exhibition centre, the largest congress facility in the Netherlands and ideally suited for this occasion. Amsterdam is the capital and the largest city of the Netherlands, world-known for its canals in the historical centre, its museums and the open mind of its multicultural inhabitants.

The congress venue is located close to the city centre and at the same time only 10 minutes away from Schiphol Amsterdam international airport, which has direct flight connections to almost all major airports world-wide. It is also easily accessible by high-speed trains from surrounding countries. We thrive to reduce the ecological footprint of this meeting as much as possible - e.g. by promoting the use of public transport and making use of modern technology to replace posters by electronic presentations.

The local organizing team is dedicated to create a lively event that will offer an unforgettable experience for all participants. To this end, up to date communication technology and social media interaction will be employed.

We are also taking into account potential restrictions due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. In either scenario all the content will be made available to registered delegates.

Please do not miss the opportunity to become part of this exceptional event and join us in Amsterdam on September 16 -19, 2021.

We look forward to welcoming you to Amsterdam.

Sincerely yours,

Jaap Groothoff

Arend Bökenkamp & Michiel Schreuder

Congress President

Chairs of the Scientific Committee

The present COVID-19 epidemic has profound impact on social life and on events involving a large number of attendees. All major congresses in 2020 had to be cancelled or transformed to virtual meetings. It is not clear yet what the epidemiological situation will be like in September 2021. Still, as more and more individuals are getting vaccinated, we are optimistic that live attendance will be possible.

Therefore, the ESPN council and the local organizing committee have decided to prepare a hybrid live and online meeting with the number of live attendants depending on the epidemiological situation and local health care regulations in September.  This will safeguard that the ESPN annual meeting 2021 can take place and the content promised be delivered.

We encourage all delegates to register for the live meeting if they consider joining us in Amsterdam. In case the health care authorities limit access to the venue the organizing committee will have to prioritize onsite attendance. Priority will be given to delegates scheduled for oral and oral pitch presentations.

This decision will be communicated as soon as possible and the difference between the fee for onsite vs. online registration will be reimbursed.

We sincerely hope that we will not have to restrict the number of onsite attendees and are committed to organizing a vibrant conference for all the delegates.

Please visit Dutch measures against COVID-19 and Travelling to the Netherlands from abroad websites before planning your visit.

Dear ESPN members,

We are happy to inform you that we have launched the website of the scientific meeting of the ESPN meeting Amsterdam 2021  and that we have opened the call for abstracts.

We also like to share some information about the meeting with you.

The meeting format

The Covid situation has forced us develop a new format for the congress which will be held as a hybrid virtual and onsite meeting.

The hybrid form combines the best of a virtual and a live meeting:

Compared to the traditional situation, it improves access for those with less financial means or for delegates who are not able to travel for other reasons. It also offers the possibility to review key takeaways and watch parallel sessions as presentations will be available on the congress web portal for 3 months following the meeting.

Compared to fully virtual meetings, the hybrid form facilitates social contacts and networking. This makes the congress more lively for both virtual and onsite attendees. In order to take this to a higher level, we will stream the meeting from all halls. There will be a director in each hall with multiple cameras and a two-way IT-service allowing for live interaction with speakers in- and outside the lecture hall and the public. There will be a TV-studio at the venue for interviews with speakers and delegates during breaks.

All content will be made available on the congress web portal during and after the meeting and the ESPN website if permission is granted by the speakers.

Important dates to remember:
April 22th: final date for abstract submission
May 15th: decision on congress format
June 1st  – July 15th: early registration
July 15th – September 1st: late registration

We look forward to an inspiring meeting and hope to meet you in Amsterdam, either in person or online!
