Dear Madam, dear Sir,

It is our pleasure and privilege to invite you to Amsterdam, the capital of The Netherlands, for the 53rd ESPN Annual Meeting in September 2021.

The scientific committee of the ESPN  2021 is proud to prepare a programme of outstanding scientific quality in collaboration with several international societies to stimulate cross-talk between different specialties involved in the treatment of children with kidney and bladder disorders. Experts from our society as well as international speakers will join forces to deliver state-of-the-art lectures, generate debate and identify questions for future research. The programme includes a full spectrum of presentations from keynote lectures, master classes, basic research and tertiary care nephrology to nephrology issues in a more general paediatrics setting. The two-day IPNA-ESPN Junior Class and four one-day hands-on courses will be held before the main congress.  Our programme is designed with young nephrology fellows in mind, the future of our society.

The meeting will be held in the RAI congress and exhibition centre, the largest congress facility in the Netherlands and ideally suited for this occasion. Amsterdam is the capital and the largest city of the Netherlands, world-known for its canals in the historical centre, its museums and the open mind of its multicultural inhabitants.

The congress venue is located close to the city centre and at the same time only 10 minutes away from Schiphol Amsterdam international airport, which has direct flight connections to almost all major airports world-wide. It is also easily accessible by high-speed trains from surrounding countries. We thrive to reduce the ecological footprint of this meeting as much as possible - e.g. by promoting the use of public transport and making use of modern technology to replace posters by electronic presentations.

The local organizing team is dedicated to create a lively event that will offer an unforgettable experience for all participants. To this end, up to date communication technology and social media interaction will be employed.

We are also taking into account potential restrictions due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Depending on the epidemiological situation the format of the meeting -  i.e. fully live, hybrid live-virtual with a limited number of delegates on site, or fully virtual - will be determined at the end of May. In either scenario all the content will be made available to registered delegates.

Please do not miss the opportunity to become part of this exceptional event and join us in Amsterdam on September 16 -19, 2021.

We look forward to welcoming you to Amsterdam.

Sincerely yours,

Jaap Groothoff

Congress President

Chairs of the Scientific Committee

The present COVID-19 epidemic has profound impact on social life and on events involving a large number of attendees. All major congresses in 2020 had to be cancelled or transformed into virtual meetings. It is not clear yet what the epidemiological situation will be in September 2021.

Both the ESPN council and the local organizing committee are determined to make the ESPN annual meeting 2021 happen and deliver the content promised. We strongly hope that there will be a live gathering in Amsterdam.

To this end, we are preparing three scenarios:

On-site live meeting supplemented by a limited online version (“Highlights of ESPN 2021”), which will offer delegates who are not able to participate, core content including the industry-sponsored symposia.

A fully virtual meeting in case the Dutch authorities prohibit a gathering of 700+ persons in the RAI premises. Interaction between speakers and delegates and among delegates will be stimulated by online moderators experienced in creating an almost live experience.

A hybrid meeting with a limited number of delegates giving oral presentations in the congress venue. This will create a lively congress and will be combined with the high-end IT support of a virtual meeting.

Before opening early registration, the final format the meeting will announced.

Dear ESPN members,

We are happy to inform you that we have launched the website of the scientific meeting of the ESPN meeting Amsterdam 2021  and that we have opened the call for abstracts.

We also like to share some information about the meeting with you.

The meeting format

The Covid situation has forced us to look for a new format for the congress. We aim to organise a hybrid virtual and onsite meeting.

This bridge between virtual and onsite has many advantages over both conventional ‘live’ and fully virtual meetings. Compared to the traditional situation, it improves the access to those with little financial means or to people who are not able to travel for other reasons and it bears the possibility to offer extra online services, like re-sharing key takeaways of presentations. Compared to fully virtual meetings, it allows people to have social contact if they prefer to attend onsite and it makes the congress more lively for both virtual and onsite attendees. In order to bring this to a higher level, we will use the services of a moderator who will fill up the interludes with interviews and films.

Since we do not know yet what the epidemiological situation and the health care regulations will be later this year, the decision on the exact format (i.e. maximum number of attendees allowed onsite in a hybrid setting) will be postponed to May. This will be made public by May 15th. For this reason, registration will be opened at June 1st.

About the program

You will find the program outline on the website.

Besides the traditional sessions with state-of-the-art lectures, pro-con discussions and oral presentations, we have introduced 18 pitch sessions for very short oral presentation of 3 minutes and 2 minutes discussion. This will allow some 200 young scientists to give an oral presentation of their work supplemented by an electronic poster. Apart from the classical oral presentations and pitch sessions, there will also be room for electronic posters.

Important dates to remember:
April 22th: final date for abstract submission
May 15th: decision on congress format
June 1st  – July 15th: early registration
July 15th – September 1st: late registration

We look forward to an inspiring meeting and hope to meet you in Amsterdam, either in person or online!
